Scientific Databases and Visualization - HepatoSys

The SDBV group is part of the HepatoSys Competence Network Systems Biology of Hepatocytes. This is a research initiative funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). As one of the largest research networks in systems biology it aims at a quantitative understanding of the complex and dynamic cellular processes in mammalian liver cells (hepatocytes). Hepatocytes play important roles in the human body, e.g. in the metabolism of many molecules, detoxification of xenobiotics or iron regulation, and they have unique regeneration properties. This makes them an interesting research subject.

We are participating in the Modeling platform with our database system SABIO-RK. Our contribution is the gathering and structuring of relevant quantitative data describing reaction kinetics in liver cells. With this objective we are collecting information on hepatocytes from literature, particularly on reactions taking place in humans, but also in other organisms. It is also planed to directly submit experimental data from partners in HepatoSys to SABIO-RK. For this purpose we are developing a tailored data submission interface.

The data we collect can be used for the set-up of biochemical models describing important functions of hepatocytes. These models could be simulated to unravel the complex processes in the liver. Cross-annotations between SABIO-RK and related databases, particularly the central data management system of HepatoSys, help to integrate the data and can be accessed by an own user interface for HepatoSys users.
